1. First off in order to get indexed quickly I suggest you put in a tiny classified ad at CraigsList.com, the site is a PR 8 and having a link to your site will get the search engines crawling all over yours. Now if you don’t want to spend the $70.00 on the articles and distribution you CAN do it for FREE. You can of course write your own articles and get article submission software from my website for FREE. But if you do have the money I suggest you do it this way because it is very time consumming. Its very important that you don’t submit more than one per week because getting too many links all at once will make the search engines unhappy. Continue to submit one per week for 3 months.

b) Submitting your web site to one way link directories is the other method I used. Again this is time consuming so I bought a piece of software that does this for me. It costs about $97.00 for the software but I’m sure that you will think its money well spent after you see results. If you don’t have the money to do this then I guess you’ll have to do it the hard way and find the directories and submit by hand.

c) Joining a well known forum is the last thing I did to get one way links to my site. You see most forums have what’s called a sig file. A sig file is a perminent signature to every post you make at the forum. I put in a link to my web site and that’s it. The only thing left to do is post topics or reply to ones already made. Again make sure you don’t spam the forum you join, this will only get your account closed. Make sure you have a relevant topic or reply and you will have no problems.

By implementing these steps I achieved a Page Rank of 5 in 3 months, keep in mind that the search engines are always changing and finding new ways to rank pages. One thing I think will always be important is the amount of one way links back to your web site. I hope these methods will help you achieve your goals and make you money online, I know they have helped my Internet home business immensely.

If you are planning to drive traffic to a business related site, remember that it will take time. Unless you have a very large budget it is impossible to drive traffic over night and even if you did this traffic would not be sustainable.

The aim is to create sustainable and increasing traffic to your web site.

Search Engines
Search engines drive a large amount of traffic on the web. If you are serious about driving traffic to your site then you will be serious about having a good ranking in the search engines.

Advertising

Advertising is a very traditional method of bringing in customers to any business. The purpose of advertising is to appeal to potential customers that do not know about your company. This could be with the intent to drive sales or it could be just to create a brand image.

Advertising your web site does not have to be all done online. In some instances, for example a local site, you would be more effective focusing on offline advertising.

Building Links

Links are what make the web work. Having a link to your site on another site that has related subject matter benefits you in several ways. You will get increased traffic from people clicking on the link and in addition search engines like Google will find the links and increase your PageRank Score

Finding Sites To Link To You

By doing a search on any search engine using the type of keywords that are related to your site, you will find a whole list of potential sites that could link to your site.

It helps if you have a site that contains useful content. It will be hard to convince another site to link to you if your site has a low value or interest to them.

Another way to find links is to find out who is linking to your competition. You can do this by using the search engines. For example entering link:www.mycompetition.com on Google will list all the sites that Google has found that links to your competition. You could then approach these sites to ask for a link.

Requesting A Link

When you have found the target sites that you would like to obtain a link from send them a courteous and polite email. State who you are, explain briefly what your site is and why it could be of interest to their site. Keep your email short and to the point. It is probably a good idea to already place a link to their site on your site. It is always worthwhile to put in your email the URL of the actual page that you would like a link on. If after 1 month they haven’t added your link then remove their link from your site.

Giving Out Awards

One novel way to gain links is to give out awards. An award could be “Well Designed Site Award” or something focused around your business or web site theme. This award should be a nice graphic that links to your site.

Free For All (FFA) Pages and Link Farms

Although it seems tempting to list your site on an FFA or link farm – don’t do it. FFA page are lists of links. When you first submit a site it will be at the top and gradually move down the list until it drops off the bottom. FFA’s will bring you no traffic and will fill your email box with thousands of Junk emails. Even worse, search engines like Google may find your link on an FFA page and ban you from their search engine. Avoid these at all costs.

Guest Books and Newsgroups

It is possible to gain some links from posting on guest books and also by putting your URL in the signature of postings on newsgroups. Although this can be a valid method of gaining visibility and links, be very careful not spam. It is rude and will not be appreciated if your only reason to post is to create a link. This will damage your reputation and backfire if done irresponsibly. Newsgroups often have rules in place that are designed to keep the board useful. Follow the rules, and contribute to the newsgroups by entering discussions and helping others with their problems.

Generating Publicity

Publicity can be a very valuable way to spread the news about your online business. It is much cheaper than advertising and often holds more weight because the story is reaching the customer via a trusted 3rd party, which holds much more credibility than any message that might come directly from you.

The media, by its very nature, is always in need of good stories that will benefit their readers. If you have something that is newsworthy then you have a good shot at creating some publicity. If your business is not something innovative or totally new, then brainstorm ways to make it newsworthy. For example – are there any charities you could partner with? there are lots of ways to add an angle to any business to make the business more attractive to the media.

One of the hardest decisions you will have to make when it comes to publicity is whether to launch the publicity campaign yourself or to use professional help.

Nobody can force the media to use your story, but with the right approach and follow-up you can be certain the media will know about your business. Media editors are often very busy and swamped with news stories, so it can be important to allow for 3-6 months for any media campaign to run it’s course.

If your company has local interest then it may be easier to get some publicity. Even if your business is national or global, you may be able to generate some local publicity along the lines of “local company launches….”

To approach the media you will need to create a publicity kit, that contains your press release and also a fact sheet about your company.

Affliate Programs

Affiliate programs can be a useful marketing tool to drive traffic and sales. The concept is simple, you allow people to sign up as affiliate and they promote your product from their web site. When you get a sale that came via their site then you pay a % commission. The actual % varies from as low as a few% up to as high as 50%. The amount is up to you.

Obviously at lower % commission there is less incentive for your affiliate to promote your product.

There are several 3rd parties that can manage an affiliate program for you, Commission Junction is a popular one, linkshare is another. With these you may have to pay a upfront fee to join and then pay a % on sales that pass through their system. In return they manage the affiliate program and provide an interface for affiliate to log in and check their affiliate accounts. Another benefit is that affiliate are more likely to trust a 3rd party to pay their commissions accurately.

An alternative is to set up your own affiliate system. There are many affiliate software options available. It will be cheaper to manage this yourself, but it will take more admin. time to manage,

You will find that many of your affiliate drive no sales, but a few may drive a significant amount of new sales. Paying a commission is a win-win for you and the affiliate.

Building Content

When people search the internet they are mostly looking for answers, or a solution to a problem. If you have a site with 1 or 2 pages then you will be limited in exposure vs a site with 1 – 200 pages. In addition, Search engines, especially search engines like Google love content

Every page in your site can be optimized for specific phrases or keywords. It is much easier to make a page focused on 1 narrow topic rank well in the search engines than it is to make 1 page rank highly for a broad topic or multiple search phrases. Use content to increase your exposure in the search engines. If you have valuable content then people will begin to link to your many pages. Each link will increase your overal popularity which will make all your other pages more visible. Given time you can build a lot of traffic just from building solid content in your site and doing at least a little search engine optimization with each page.

The web is primarily a communication tool that propogates information and understanding. Add to the value of the web by making your site content rich and valuable to others and no doubt you will enjoy success.

There are many writers who will let you put their work in your web pages, so long as you keep their name and resources information. Do not steal content! – this will no doubt cause you copyright problems and ruin your reputation also.

Building A Community

One of the best ways to build sustainable traffic to your site is to create a community. Newsgroups and bulletin boards can over time turn your site into a high traffic zone.

1. You must do to create free backlinks is to join any five forums related to your niche or related to your website or blog. Choosing the right keywords and keyword phrases is the first and the most important step on a way to a successful website and improved search engine rankings. The keyword factor is the one that will decide whether your website promotion campaign will be a success or a miserable fail. Here is a small step by step guide describing a process of keyword selection plus few helpful tips and ideas.
Keyword Analysis Or Keyword Research

Before you move on and do anything else, you should have at least a broad idea about your keywords. To start with, you’ll need at least one keyword called also a primary keyword. This should be very specific. For example, if you are trying to sell laptops of some particular model or brand – let’s say Toshiba, your primary keyword should be

Toshiba laptop. A study conducted by one of the major search engines revealed that more than 65% of searches consist of a keyword phrase rather than a single keyword. Thus your primary keyword shouldn’t be just a single word, it should consist of at least two words.

Once you know the primary keyword, visit the following websites, type it in and and you’ll get a collection of highly searched related keywords.

Visit your competitors’ sites and check out their pages (title, h1 and meta tags) to see which keywords they are using. List down their keywords and keyword phrases. Now you should have a decent bunch of the keywords most commonly used for your type of business.
Make Your Own List

You have the list of competitors’ keywords as well as keywords suggested by various online tools. Now it’s a time to write down your own keywords. Try to choose the most related ones. You might also include your company’s name and/or city. Add plurals and variations of the keywords. Spell the most important ones in both American and British English.
Read The Mind Of Potential Visitors

Imagine you are a potential visitor or client. Open up a search engine and type in keywords from top of your head. Eventually, you might ask few friends to do the same. Add the suggested keywords to the list.
Narrow Your List

At this point, you should already have around 30 relevant keywords written down on a sheet of paper. The problem is that optimizing a webpage for so many keywords is extremely difficult if not impossible.

Ranking highly for popular URL’s can send a huge amount of traffic and is a great way to target your competitors customers.

For example if you saw your competitor running a newspaper advert with a URL such as domainname.com/offer at the end of the advert you can expect people to be searching for that URL on the major search engines.

The image below shows the traffic Blogstorm received in the last 2 weeks from people searching for “www.direct.gov.uk/taxdisc” . If a tax disc was a commercial product that I could sell then this traffic would be pretty valuable. Although the total is 8,019 the figures for the last few days have been around 2,000 per day.

Of course you need to have a catchy title otherwise nobody will click on your listing, it also helps to be competing with people who have no clue about SEO.

Ranking for these sorts of pages is pretty easy because they usually have very little competition unless you are targeting major sites. Certainly if you stick to a niche industry you can often outrank the original site or at least come second.

As well as keeping an eye on URLs that your competitors are publishing offline a great way to find popular URLs to target is by using the Google Keyword Tool. Simply enter “www” as your keyword and it comes up with a list of popular URLs which can be ordered and sorted as you wish.

Google Suggest is also a great way to find commonly searched for domains and even pages within domains.

Pick a few keywords or phrases that describe your site. Use them, and words related to them, whenever it’s natural to do so. Repeating them uselessly is no good , use them in sentences, headlines, and links.
3: Content is King

Users don’t search for design, they search for content. If your site doesn’t have content people want, no one will look at it.

Every page on your site should follow the Inverted Pyramid. Each page should lead with a relevant H1 tag with one of your keywords, and the first paragraph of text should be a summary of the rest of the page.
4: Clean Code is Searchable Code

Build your sites in a text editor, and write clean, human-readable HTML. The HTML should follow the conceptual structure of the page, navigation first, followed by the H1 tag, then the first paragraph, etc. Try to use descriptive tags when possible. Use UL for lists, P for paragraphs, H tags for heads and subheads, and STRONG for bolded text. Don’t overuse Divs.

Your site can still be artistic and cool, that’s what CSS is for.
5: The Home Page is the Most Important Page

Your home page is the key to your site being found by search engines. It should summarize the rest of the site, and give a clear, compelling reason for a user to look at the other pages in the site.
6: Links Have Meaning

Search engines pay a lot of attention to the links on your site, and the words used in those links. Never use “click here” or “see more” for a link. The link text should describe where the link will take the user, such as “more examples of CSS web design” or “learn how we can improve your SEO.”

The more relevant the links on a page, the more findable the page becomes. Don’t go overboard, and don’t link to anything irrelevant. If your page is focused on minimalist web design, a link to the Design MeltDown page on minimalism will boost your SEO. A link to a hilarious picture of a cat will not.
7: Title Tags for the Win

Every page in your site should have a title with the site name and a short description of the page. About 60 letters total. Include a keyword. Remember that the page title is what appears in search results, it should give users a clear reason to click on it.

Your navigation links should have title attributes that match the titles of your pages. It’s a small thing, but it will give you a significant SEO improvement.
8: Alt Tags Matter

Every image on your site should have an alt tag. Especially images that are relevant to the page. If your page is focused on CSS tricks, labelling a screenshot “example of rounded CSS corners” will improve your page’s findability. Labelling it “screenshot” or “image” will do the opposite.
9: Ignore Most Meta Tags

A long time ago meta tags were the secret to SEO. Those days are gone. The only meta tag that really matters now is the description tag. Search engines may use it to provide the text under the link to your page in their results. Make sure it describes the page in a way that explains why a user searching for your content would want to look at your page.
10: Have a Site Map

Make sure you have a site map. This is an xml file that describes the structure of your page. Make one, and give it to Google.
11: Design for Humans

Search engines are designed to find what humans want. That means the best way to make your site findable is to design it for humans. Your job as a designer is to solve a problem, not make art, prove a point, serve your ego or break a boundry. In this case, your problem is to provide your users with a site that is easy to use and full of what they’re looking for. If you can do that, the search engines will find you.
